two good pieces from jolly old Engletown.
the first debunks the pope, providing much needed counter coverage in the face of a "good old days" flood.
the second debunks death.
alongside this suggested reading, i have a factual question: is attempted suicide illegal in the US? federally? stately? locally?
and a subjective followup (easier, more fun): should it be?

According to this site , suicide is technically illegal in several states though there is no imposed penalty (financial, disgraceful burial, etc.). Attempted suicide is also a crime in six states.
How do I feel about suicide? It's tough. I belive that a person of sound mind who wishes to end his own life should not face restrictions. The problem is determining who's of sound mind. Generally we assume a healthy able-bodied person who wants to end her own life out of dispair or hopelessness is not of sound mind. By contrast, a terminal patient suffering physical pain who wants to die is often considered of sound mind. Those aren't stupid assumptions. And, of course, an able-bodied suicidal person's needs neither permission nor assistance to commit suicide, the only impediments are his own inhibitions-fear of pain and/or death. I'm okay with that deterrent. For the old and infirm who may require assistance, I support that choice to die, and anyone who helps them implement their wishes, as long as those wishes are clear and the decision maker is of sound mind.
